How often should racking be inspected?
HSE HSG76 and SEMA guidelines require weekly visual checks by your trained PRRS + at least annual expert inspections by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI). High-risk sites may need more frequent expert checks.
Who is qualified to carry out expert racking inspections?

Only competent persons – preferably SEMA Approved Racking Inspectors (SARIs) – should perform annual inspections. In-house staff can do weekly visual checks after proper training.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Racking Inspection FAQs

What is included in an annual racking inspection?

Full structural check of uprights, beams, bracing, baseplates, fixings, load notices, and safety accessories. Includes SEMA RAG classification, photographic evidence, and prioritised repair recommendations.

How long does a racking inspection take?

Depends on warehouse size and racking volume. Small sites: 2–4 hours. Larger/multi-bay sites: 1–2 full days. We aim to minimise disruption.

Do you inspect both pallet and cantilever racking?
Yes – we are fully qualified for both adjustable pallet racking (APR) and cantilever systems (long-load storage like timber, steel, pipes).
What happens if racking is not compliant?

Possible HSE enforcement notice, prohibition notice, unlimited fines, prosecution, civil claims, and invalidated insurance. Acting on inspection reports protects your business.

What does HSG76 actually say about racking inspections?

HSG76 (Warehouse Health & Safety Guide) states that storage systems must be inspected at suitable intervals by a competent person. SEMA recommends annual expert inspections by a SARI and weekly visual checks by a trained PRRS. It also emphasises prompt repair of damaged racking.

Where can I read the official HSG76 guidance?

Download the free PDF directly from the HSE website: HSG76 – Warehouse Health & Safety (PDF)

Who should attend racking safety training?

PRRS (Person Responsible for Racking Safety), forklift operators, warehouse supervisors, health & safety managers, and anyone involved in loading/unloading racking.

How long is the training certificate valid?

3 years (renewable). Refresher training recommended sooner if significant changes occur (new racking, new staff, incidents, or regulatory updates).

Training & Compliance FAQs

Are your training courses recommended by HSE and SEMA?

Yes – delivered by SEMA Approved Racking Inspectors and fully aligned with current SEMA Codes of Practice and HSE (HSG76) guidance. Certificates are widely accepted for audits and insurance.

Do you provide training for multi-site companies?

Yes – we coordinate training across multiple locations. Group discounts available for 8+ delegates.

What are the most common types of racking damage?

Forklift impact to uprights/beams (70–80% of cases), beam deflection from overloading, bent/missing bracing, loose baseplate fixings, missing safety clips, arm deflection (cantilever). See full guide here.

How do I know if damage is serious?

Use the SEMA RAG system: Red = immediate danger (unload now), Amber = urgent repair (within 4 weeks), Green = monitor. Always consult a SARI for accurate classification.

Damage & Specific System FAQs

Can minor (Green) damage be ignored?

No – even Green damage should be monitored and recorded. Small issues can worsen over time and become Amber or Red.

What’s the difference between pallet and cantilever racking inspections?

Pallet inspections focus on uprights, beams, bracing, and pallet load stability. Cantilever inspections emphasise arm deflection, column stability, and long-load balance. Both follow SEMA standards.

How do I check if my racking is overloaded?

Compare actual loads against load plaques (SWL per level/bay). Look for sagging beams, bowing uprights, or floor anchor strain. Our inspections verify real vs. rated loads..

Can I repair racking damage myself?

Minor Green fixes may be possible after training, but all structural repairs (especially Red/Amber) must be carried out by qualified engineers using manufacturer-approved parts to maintain compliance and warranty.

Do environmental factors affect racking damage?

Yes – corrosion in chilled/wet environments, temperature expansion/contraction, seismic activity (rare in UK), or poor housekeeping (debris blocking fixings) can accelerate damage.

Insurance FAQs

Will insurers accept inspections by inspectors that aren't SARI Inspectord?

Some may, but many explicitly require SEMA Approved Inspectors (SARIs) or equivalent competence. Using a SARI provides the strongest proof of due diligence and compliance.

What documents should I keep for insurance purposes?

Keep all SARI inspection reports (with photos & RAG grading), proof of repairs, PRRS training certificates, and records of weekly visual checks for at least 5–7 years (or as per your policy terms).
